The Made In The Shade Gals at Duckstock 2009!

The Made In The Shade gals are beside themselves with excitement.  The good dudes of Duckstock '09 have invited us to add an extra bit of creative indie spirit to this year's festival procedings!

Duckstock is a FREE festival taking place at our very favourite Glasgow city centre venue, The Flying Duck on Sunday 16th August.  Duckstock coincides with the 40 year anniversary of ultimate free lovin' indie-fest Woodstock.  Sticking true to the spirit of the 1969 Woodstock gathering, Duckstock will bring together live performances from lots of different acts on different stages (all performing at least one cover of a song performed at Woodstock!) with poets, djs, film, exhibits, food, drinks and indie shopping!  The Made In The Shade gals will be playing a wee DJ set here and there too!

The festival kicks off at 1pm.  Entry is free.  Music is free.  Friends are free.  Love may well be free, but I'd be sure to check first.

If you want to do your homework before coming along to Duckstock '09, we found this fabulous little site that tell y'all EVERYTHING you need to know about Woodstock '69

>>>>>

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SELL YOUR WARES @ DUCKSTOCK?

In keeping with the vibe of the day, Duckstock are offering y'all FREE selling space at the festival on Sunday 16th August.  Think your products suit the (city centre) festival goer?  Drop an email quick smart to bookings@wearemadeintheshade.com and we'll sort you right out.

A Jolly July Catch-Up: Some news and updates for y'all

Evening all!

Apologies for the eery silence at wearemadeintheshade.com of late.  The gals have been super busy laying exciting plans for future Made In The Shade events and ventures.  Eeep!

Cowgal Clare shows off her best western get-up in The Sunday Herald

I know, I know.  We've been banging on about Clare appearing in the Sunday Herald for ages - but honest!  It's really happening!  Clare enjoyed her little photoshoot this afternoon and she's gearing up for her interview on Monday.  Our gal will feature in the 'My Favourite Outfit' column in next weekend's Sunday paper.  Keep your peepers peeled!

Made In The Shade featured in Big In Falkirk documentary

Our chums at UZ Events forwarded us this link to a documentary made by a talented media student during the Falkirk festivities in May '09.  For those of you who didn't make it along to the festival, this little movie gives a splendid overview of the event - hopefully enough to entice you to attend next year!  For those of you who did swing by, then you'll catch a glimpse of some of your favourite acts and installations.  Look out for the grannies on giant shopping trolleys, the flamenco dancer in the snow globe and... Made In The Shade!  The film features quick interviews with our very own Suzanne Smith and the lovely Rosemary Cunningham of *piplessjam.  Hooray!

To watch the Big In Falkirk documentary in full (it's about 10 minutes long), click here.

Exciting developments (that we can't really tell you about yet!)

We've been working very hard behind the scenes at Made In The Shade HQ.  We're laying some pretty exciting plans and we hope y'all will be as thrilled about 'em as we are.  We're not quite ready to unveil everything properly yet, but we can tell you that not only are we toiling away to produce some fabulous events for you, but we're also scouring the city for the perfect property to house the all-new Made In The Shade Hub!  The Hub will act as a permanent base for the Made In The Shade Gals to do all their important business and will also house a flippin' wonderful retail and showcase space. but - more about that later once we've got everything arranged.... Opening day is a fair way off yet, but we want to keep you up to date!

If you are a designer, maker, crafter or vintage seller, you might be interested to hear that we're about to launch a folio of very special services designed just for you - aiming to help you develop your indie ventures.  We'll be launching these very shortly, so look out for an info mail coming your way int he next few weeks!  If you just cannot wait and you need to know more NOW then we'll do our best to answer your questions.  Get in touch!

Made In The Shade Summertime Hop - Thank Yous & Retrospective

We're still recuperating after Summertime Hop here at Made In The Shade HQ.  We worked our bobby socks off in the run up to the event and we put in a good 17 hour shift on the day.  We need a big snooze!

Despite the footfall being lower than we anticipated, we still managed to have a fun, productive day at the Debating Chamber & Reading Room.  Lots and lots of hands helped make the day a success and we gotta give due thanks.  First up - thank you to the 25 vendors who set up shop with us.  The stall displays looked beautiful and the variety and quality of products on offer was spectacular.  We received fabulous feedback from visitors.  Customers were thrilled to leave with a little piece of handmade magic or vintage treasure!  Special thanks must go to this season's Made In The Shade newcomers for embracing the whole affair and to the hard core that helped with the daytime/night time changeover and continued to sell way into the night!  Thank you too to those who donated fabulous gifts to Flora the Tombola!  She appreciates it.  This season's charity is the SSPCA.  They'll be receiving a tidy little cheque from us.

Thank you to the friends and Made In The Shade volunteers who worked hard throughout the day to keep things organised:  Ruth Hollywood did a sterling job meeting and greeting our visitors and Sheena May made a fantastic job of managing Nora's Bake Sale & the Craft Lucky Dip.  Thanks too to Allan and Jacqueline for ferrying us around and helping out where needed!  Thank you to the GU Stitch n Bitch gals for setting up their pretty crafty tea party in the Craft Lounge and thanks to Miss Moovelous for getting in the swing with the crochet craft-along!

We had some flippin' swell entertainment at The Hop!  Thanks to David Duffy for squeezing in a sneaky wee acoustic set in the Craft Lounge.  This hardworking chap played 3 shows in 1 day!  Thanks too to our good chum Dave Arcari for taking part and giving us a sterling performance.  We're grateful to Margaret, Matthew and Catriona too.  They came as guests and ended up as roadies!  The Tennessee Hotshots had us movin' and shakin' into the night.  If you get the chance to catch these cats live, then we can't recommend 'em enough.  Just swell.  Thank you to Aaron & Sailor Tony of legendary killer 50s record hop All Tore Up (and chums) for keeping us entertained and on the dancefloor til we got papped out of the venue.  We couldn't think of a more fitting, more fun way to end the day.  We'll be donning our frocks and getting along to Blackfriars for another All Tore Up fix soon!  Huge thanks go to Ken for providing us with all the technical bits we needed to put the event together and to Paul for putting the whole shebang together.  He humphed, he climbed and he plugged everything in AND stayed around to make sure everything went smoothly onstage.  Thanks Paul!  And thanks to Ian for doing the Sailor Jerry run.  That was crucial to the success of the party!

Thanks to everyone who made it along to shop handmade and join in the crafty fun.  Special thanks go to our fellow Starter for 6ers for taking the time to lend their support and thanks too to our chums from NESTA and the CEO.  Thanks to Josie, Lyns, Lyndsay and Jo for making not one - but TWO trips!  'Twas lovely to see you!  And we must give a very special mention to The Birthday Girl who chose to spend her 10th birthday celebrations with us at The Hop!  Best dancer on the floor!  ;o)

We'll be posting a little photo gallery soon.  Stay tuned!

Stop the Press!

Thank you so much to the vendors and Made In The Shade lovers who have kindly blogged about The Summertime Hop on their lovely pages.  We appreciate your support.  We're working on a nice page where we can include links to all your Made In The Shade related chatterings.  Right now though, we'd like to share a few press updates with you.

Made In The Shade Marquee @ Big In Falkirk

We had a fabulous time at Big In Falkirk last weekend!  Despite a shaky start on Friday - anxiously wondering whether the rain would ever stop or not, the weather did (almost) hold out for the entire duration of the festival!  We had to cable tie just about everything in the marquee to prevent the wind from wrecking the place, but we were happy that the event was a dry and sunny one!

Thank yous...

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Jodie Noble and the production team at UZ Events for doing such a splendid job of organising the festival!  Sneaking a peek at event operations on a grand scale was truly eye-popping and we're ever so grateful for being looked after so well! Thanks too to Davie Lauder and chums for lifting and laying things for us and thanks to the man who took Carrie round the site on the bonkers buggy-doodah!  Highlight of the month!  Thank you to Lisa Watt for helping with the MITS Marquee promo and for being so damned competent!  UZ - you are fabulous.  You know who else is fabulous?  Ruth Hollywood, Jennifer Nicolson, Corinne Robinson and Graham Smith, that's who!   Thank you for all your help setting up the marquee and transporting various things to and from Falkirk!

Thank you to the I ♥ Haggis man who fed us on Saturday.  Thanks to the fire engine man for the free coffee and for the vintage clothes buying tips!  Thanks to Mischief La Bas for allowing me to have my picture taken. Thank to the kind man who offered to buy us ice-cream cones.  Thank you to the toddler who blew us kisses.  Thank you to Garry for buying us Jelly Babies.  Thank you to all the lovely people in yellow jackets who looked after us.

Thank you to all the vendors who took part in the event.  It was great to spend the weekend with such a lovely bunch of folks and we really appreciate all the efforts y'all went to to make sure the customers were sufficiently wowed!  We hope you had a fabulous time and we look forward to seeing y'all again soon!

ALL WELCOME

Phewee Jamboree!

Whoops! There goes another Made In The Shade!

Well, we did have high hopes and we did have the jitter(bug) for about week prior,  but all in all it's safe to say that the Springtime Jamboree was surely a rootin' tootin success!  We received some fabulous feedback from customers on the quality and range of work exhibited by the wonderful vendors and we received some lovely comments from visitors on how fabulous the event was.  Shucks!

Thank you to the designers, neo-crafters and vintage sellers who took part in the event.  Y'all made such a wonderful effort and it absolutely paid off.  Thank you to the 600 visitors who took the time to come see us and spend time at our event (except for the handful of clearly misplaced/lost sneaky petes who tried to get past the welcome table without paying the measly £1 entry charge/charity donation - that's just not acceptable Made In The Shade-style behaviour and we bid y'all good day!)  Thank you to Jamie and all the staff at Oran Mor for being such a great support during the proceedings and for solving our early morning 'issues' with calm and poise!  Thank you to the wonderful team of volunteers from Glasgow Caledonian University who showed themselves to be a great bunch of folks and possibly the most helpful bunch of guys and dolls a Made In The Shade organiser could ask for.  Thank you to Mistress of Ceremonies, Ruth Hollywood (actual name, yes) for being super-efficient and keeping everyone right and everyone smiling all day long!  Thank you to all the vendors, generous friends and local businesses who donated gifts to the Early Bird goody bags and to Nora the Tombola.  Oh - and thank you to cousin Nora for standing in for Flora at such short notice!  Thank you to Gillian for taking some fabulous snaps of the event and thank you to Garry, Suzanne and Michelle for their time spent in the kitchen whipping up sweet treats and bakery delights for the MITS Bake Sale.  I think that's everybody thanked?  If you've somehow accidentally been missed, accept our apologies - but rest assured that we do wholeheartedly appreciate your input into making the Made In The Shade Springtime Jamboree go off with a wiggle and walk.  Many thank yous to you all.

We ♥ The Skinny

We do. It's true.  We really do love The Skinny. It's Scotland's cutting edge culture magazine - what's not to like about that? We like Scotland and and we sure do enjoy engaging with culture and cultural activity now and again! At present The Skinny is a pretty swell guide to what's going on across Scotland: gigs, film screenings, exhibits, festivals, shopping, eating out... All in there, yes siree. The Skinny people even put our chums The Phantom Band on the cover last month. That was exciting!

Even MORE exciting is that from next month Made In The Shade takes up a blog residence on www.theskinny.co.uk! Waowsers!  Now to your list of 'stuff I like to read about in The Skinny' you can add;

1. Interviews & profiles of Scottish designers & makers
2. Vintage lifestyle features
3. Indie shopping guides
4. Articles about DIY culture & indie business
5. Photo-stories about guerilla crafters
6. Crafty how-to tutorials and other bits about making stuff!

These six little items will certainly feature on the all-new Skinny blog but there'll be so much more included besides! We cannot WAIT to get started on this fabulous new project.

We are so excited that we've decided to host a little launch party for our shiny new blog space. The party takes place on Thursday 16th April at Macsorley's Music Bar, (Jamaica Street, Glasgow). We will post all the details of the evening shortly but for now all you gotta do is mark the date in your diaries and get your best vintage get-up out of the closet - ready for an evening of old-time fun! The party gives us a chance to celebrate the launch of the Made In The Shade blog but it also presents a long overdue opportunity for us to thank y'all for your support over the past year! Hoorah!

Supporting Our Local Robots

You will know of these talented fellas from Made In The Shades past!  Our very good friend and my very good husband have joined forces to create a series of work that will mesmerise and beguile!

Artist Neil Slorance (Neil OSM) likes robots. Photographer Garry Maclennan (YHF) likes robots too. Brought together through their shared obsession with clunky creatures with bright eyes and glowing function buttons, Neil OSM and YHF have worked in partnership to present their debut exhibition: 'Uninvited'.

Launching on Friday 3nd April and running until Friday 17th April at Che Camille (Argyll Arcade), 'Uninvited' documents the sometimes turbulent lives of robots living in our neighbourhoods. 'Uninvited' communicates the robots' yearning for acceptance, their longing for companionship and love. The exhibition documents the struggles the robots endure just trying to stay safe in the city.

'Uninvited' is; topical, bright, beautiful, melancholic, humorous, dark, hopeful, fun, sad, reflective, relevant.

For further exhibition information, press inquiries or secret special details of the VIP opening event, please contact uninvitedrobots2009@gmail.com

A Mini Press Mention

Hi there Made In The Shaders,

We swing by quickly this morning to share a little article you might be interested in.  Our fabulous journo chum Claire has recently submitted a short piece to one of our very favourite publications, Amelia's Magazine and has very kindly given a little mention to Made In The Shade!

You can read the article here.

Please note though that there are a couple of wee errors in the story.  1)  Made In The Shade is intended to be included in the article as another example of the rise of diy culture in Glasgow - not as an event affiliated with the GCM.   2)  [We Are] Fuzzy Felt Folk & Country Crafting! take place in Macsorley's on the 1st Sunday of the month.  FFF is run by Carrie Maclennan and Country Crafting! is run by Clare Nicolson.  Neither of these events are affiliated with the GCM.  They are run independently by a couple o' chums with a penchant for country music, colouring in, making things and chatting to friends over a whole bunch of rum!  3) Oh - and at the time of writing Clare Nicolson was the Mafia Don but has since taken on a new role with the group.

Phew!  :o)  Enjoy!

Vendor Applications Now Open!

The Made In The Shade Team

x

NOTE: To those of you who are keen to register your interest in other MITS events scheduled throughout the year, please hold on to your bonnets for just a little while. We'd rather take bookings for one event at a time so once we have the Spring Jamboree all sewn up (boom boom) then we'll issue another call for contributors for the Summertime Hop etc. Swell! Please be patient. x

Springtime Jamboree '09!

Greetings Made In The Shaders!

I come bearing exciting tidings.

As some of you will have heard, Made In The Shade has been deemed temporarily homeless for a portion of 2009.  However, we have been searching far and wide for suitably fabulous spaces from which to host special Made In The Shade shopping soirees and we think we're about half way there in securing a couple of splendid venues for y'all!  We will be setting up shop in alternative venues during Spring/Summer but will return home to The Lighthouse in Autumn/Winter.

Keep your eyes on the site next week for details of our Springtime Jamboree event!  Made In The Shade packs its overnight case and takes a roadtrip out of the city centre.  This year we are celebrating the arrival of the daffodils and crocuses way out west!  Yes siree!  Everybody needs a change of scenery don't they?  We are adding the final details to the arrangements now.  The event takes place on a sunny Sunday at the Oran Mor in early April.  Information will be published here first.

If you are interested in selling your handmade or vintage wares at Made In The Shade this Spring, hold on to your hats!  A call for contributors will be winging its way to y'all very shortly.  For general event queries though, you can email us at madeintheshadebookings@gmail.com  We're always pleased to hear from you!

For now, keep yourselves occupied - bake a cake, cuddle on the sofa and enjoy Judy Garland & Fred Astaire in...  Easter Parade!  What else?!

There's A Party On The Hill

... and we would love you to come! You can bring a cup and saucer if you want and if you fancy a cream bun - knock yourself out!

[We Are] Fuzzy Felt Folk, Glasgow's country music craft-friendly club is celebrating it's 2nd anniversary with a little hoedown in Macsorley's Music Bar, Jamaica Street on Sunday 1st February.

There'll be live music from our talented chums Schnapps and The Invisible Republic and Lady Wurlitzer (aka Made In The Shade's Carrie Maclennan) will provide a country tinged vintage soundtrack throughout the day.

Schnapps, fresh from gigs with White Denim, RTX (and by the time this show comes around) The Brute Chorus, have very kindly agreed to join our party and deliver some raw, abstract wonky tonk to our ears (most likely mediated by the effects of tequila). The band brings together musical and creative talent from all sorts of corners of the city and the resultant mixy-mashy that emerges from the meld is quite, quite fabulous. Oh yes siree!

The Invisible Republic have been good friends of Made In The Shade & FFF for a very, very long time and we're absolutely thrilled to have 'em along (with new members and all!) to our 2nd birthday party. The last time I heard the band play, I was stomping my feet and clapping my hands and singing along to their fabulous renditions of Hank Williams classics (arranged and performed especially for The Parsonage Hank Williams Tribute). Seeing the band on the Opry stage is one of my highlights of 2009 and I cannot wait to be swaying along to 'She Named A Bullet After Me' on the 1st Feb.

Aswell as getting together to celebrate the Fuzzy Felt Folk birthday, we're also tipping our stetsons to the launch of Clare Nicolson's brand new public crafting project, Country Crafting! If you are a maker or an all-round creative type and you fancy joining in on some pub crafting (or even some fun colouring in!) then we'd love to see you! Clare will have a load of creative fun in store and you can come along and ask her about her fabulous plans for 2009! Later in the year there'll be cross-stitch tutorials, knitting classes and all sorts of opportunties to make things. Come find out more!

We'll see you at Macsorley's between 3pm and 10pm!

xx

Events Calendar & News

Good tidings Made In The Shaders,

You will notice that we have made some ammendments to our Event Calendar at last. It's taken us a little while to recover from the Made In The Shade Festive Shopping Weekender but we are now ready to get going on our series of events for 2009 and my oh my - we are not doing things by halves!

As you may already know, The Lighthouse has secured a fabulous high profile exhibit between March and September this year and as such, Gallery 5 will be out of commission as a Made In The Shade venue for much of 2009. However, we have booked two fabulous events at The Lighthouse later in the year. We'll be having our cosy Autumn shindig on Saturday 26th September and we'll be hosting the 2nd annual Festive Shopping Weekender on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th December. You will be relieved to know that we are by no means neglecting plans for Spring/Summer events. We will shortly be announcing details of the Made In The Shade Springtime Jamboree and hold on to your hats as we blow the top off a very, very exciting edition of Made In The Shade set to take place this summer.

Aswell as our trademark shopping events, Made In The Shade plans to explore new territories in 2009 so if you haven't done so already, subscribe to the blog to keep abreast of all news and developments. If you are a neo-crafter, quirky designer or vintage seller and you're looking to take part in a Made In The Shade shopping event, look out for calls for contributors. These will always be posted here first.

We will be publishing details of the first round of Made In The Shade shopping events shortly. Please check back to the site on Monday 12th January for exciting updates. A call for contributors will follow soon after. Dear Senor Santa Clause

Dear Santa,

It's that time of year again. It doesn't seem so long since my last letter. Thank you for last year's lovely gifts. You really do have fabulous taste.

I have been a very good girl this year. I have worked hard alongside my fabulously talented friends to create a wonderful new shopping event in Glasgow. It's called Made In The Shade. People seem to like it. I admit, there has been a little pouting and even a little crying on the odd occasion during the past twelve months, but over all I think I have been very well behaved. Though you probably know that already, huh?

There are lots and lots of things I'd like for my Christmas this year. Since I can't decide, I thought I'd send you a huge list and you can just choose what you like. I won't be disappointed.

Ceramic Russian dolls by Kitty & Dude

Scrapbook jotter by Helen Gallogly

Beautiful fabric shopper by Emoni

Oh-so-cute domino pin by *pipless jam

Illustrated doillie by Made By Mother

Pretty pony by Lullabylily

Handmade books by Bindy Boo

(Etsy store coming soon!)

Thanks so much Senor Santa Clause. I'll be sure to leave you a pink wafer biscuit and a glass of pear juice for when you arrive at my house on Christmas Eve.

Say hi to Mrs Clause and the elves for me won't you.

Yours faithfully,

Carrie

MITS III Loves You!

My! Hasn't time flown!? The Made In The Shade team have successfully made it through an entire year's worth of events, positioning Made In The Shade as a key showcase for neo-craft, quirky design and vintage lifestyle in the UK.

Since the event launched in May we've welcomed around 9000 discerning shoppers through the Made In The Shade galleries at The Lighthouse and we've established an ever growing population of loyal fans and visitors. The feedback we have received from customers has been fabulous. Handmade lovers and vintage aficionados have truly embraced the arrival of Made In The Shade and I suspect we may even have converted some mainstream high street shoppers too as the Made In The Shade word has spread via enthusiastic chatter and press coverage! We have exciting plans for 2009 and we look forward to telling y'all about 'em soon!

For now, we'd like to thank a few folks who made our Festive Shopping Weekender such a success last weekend. 2886 visitors came to see us on Saturday and another 1896 came to see us on Sunday! Quite remarkable really! Thank you to all those customers who showed their interest and support in the event. Thank you to the 70+ exhibitors who set up shop over the two days, providing customers with a vast array of wonderful design pieces and vintage items to browse (and purchase!) and thanks to the makers who offered Christmas gifts up to our gift tree! Thank you to Hollie & Gillian and the staff at The Lighthouse. Thank you to the CEC members for taking part in the CEC showcase. Thank you to Ken, Jennifer, Dominic, Garry and Pauline. Thank you to the team at The List and the team at Selvedge. Thanks too to Maureen Ellis at the Evening Times, Jennifer at Indie Quarter and Caishnah at She's Crafty. Special thanks must go to Janis & The Parsonage for their beautiful peformance on Saturday. We have probably missed some names, but rest assured all your efforts are truly appreciated and we're thrilled to have your support.

We wish you all a fabulous Christmas and a swell New Year and we look forward to sharing our 2009 plans and events calendar with you shortly.

Subscribe to the blog to keep up to date with the adventures of the MITS team and keep abreast of updates and opportunities.

Nina's Hair Parlour: Cancellation

Oh, hello there Made In The Shade fans.

We are oh so glum today. We've just had word from Nina's Vintage Hair Parlour HQ with the unfortunate news that due to unforseen circumstances, the super-duper salon stylists have had to cancel their trip north to Made In The Shade at the last minute.

We are so sorry to have whipped y'all up in a hairdo frenzy only to leave you with unruly barnets, but we do hope you understand. We will certainly be inviting the Hair Parlour guys and dolls to set up salon at our event again so as soon as we have the booking confirmed, you will be the first to know.

We're so blue.

However...  with or without beautiful tresses, we are still throwing y'all a swell ole Festive Shopping Weekender - so pop on your headscarf and come visit the wonderfully talented makers, designers and vintage sellers that are setting up shop!  Christmas shopping ahoy!

THE Vintage Hair Parlour Comes To MITS

PLEASE NOTE AMENDED INFO AS OF 02.12.08

NINA'S HAIR PARLOUR WILL UNFORTUNATELY NOT BE SETTING UP SALON AT MITS III BUT WE WILL HOPEFULLY HAVE A NEW DATE FOR YOU VERY SOON - APOLOGIES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.

We are beside ourselves with excitement that Nina's Vintage Hair Parlour is setting up salon in the Made In The Shade Vintage Nook at this season's event! For those of you who haven't happened across the fabulous Nina and her team of talented stylists and grooming experts just yet, then read on - and be prepared for your life to change forever!

In 2006, Nina’s Hair Parlour in London Town revolutionised hairdressing for a baying audience of style savvy individuals unhappy with the fashion for homogenisation and Kate Moss cast offs. Building a loyal clientele, Nina Butkovich-Budden wowed the nation's press with Victory Rolls, Finger Waves and Beehives of such exacting style and sophistication that an appointment with the headdresser became more precious than cocktails before dinner! The Guardian, The Independent, Elle Magazine, French Vogue; Nina was wooed by them all, yet no amount of good press could guarantee a Saturday afternoon appointment without at least a month's notice.

(Photograph by Tony K Photography and used with kind permission of NVHP)

Moving away from replicating the same old fads, these vintage hairstyles are crafted to suit the wearer. Rockabilly Rebel, Screen Siren, Burlesque Beauty, Bounder or Cad, Nina’s Hair Parlour caters for everyone and every look. Stocked with original 50s chairs mounted with full hair dryers, original metal marcel waving clips and the unbeatable retro know-how, the irresistible team at Nina’s team offer a service unrivalled by any other salon in the country. And the experience doesn’t need to end with your hair appointment! Make up and styling classes are a regular feature at the parlour on London's Edgware Road, allowing Nina to burst the bubble of everyday dressing down.

Nina has a history of working as a period style consultant at the Young Vic Theatre and has been the hair creator of the new Ray Davies’s musical, 'Come Dancing' at The Theatre Royal. Apologies & Corrections

I expect by now many of you will have signed up to receive regular e-newsletters and marketing mailshots from regular Made In The Shade venue, The Lighthouse. The cutest little envelope landed on my carpet this morning containing the cutest little pull-out brochure detailing all the fabulous events scheduled at The Lighthouse over the festive season. The retail pick in promotion of The Lighthouse Shop is just swell too (My husband has already stocked up on Tie Napkins!) If you haven't taken a look yet or if you haven't received your copy - be sure to pick one up from The Lighthouse reception area.

Anyway - if you have read your leaflet, you will note that Made In The Shade is afforded a little mention in the festive calendar. Hooray! However, on behalf of The Lighthouse, we would like to apologise for errors in the listing. Firstly, Made In The Shade is not organised by nor run in association with the Glasgow Craft Mafia. We surely are chums with the Mafia makers, but Made In The Shade is an independent event managed by 4 creative volunteers. Secondly, the event features over 70 designers and makers (not just 50 as stated) and thirdly, while the majority of our fabulous sellers are Scottish and/or are based in Scotland - there are a select few participants who are engaging with Made In The Shade over quite some distance and are making a huge effort to come join us at the Festive Shopping Weekender in December!

Whoop!

Oh! The Craft Fair Confusion!

Hello there!

It has been brought to our attention today by several confused Made In The Shade exhibitors that an events company, Designcrafts, are holding craft markets at The Lighthouse this month and next. Information about the event or the organisers hosting it is rather limited - despite the first event being scheduled to take place in around 3 weeks! However, we do understand that the event is billed as "an opportunity for producers of contemporary art, craft and design to market their work to as wide an audience as possible".

It is important for us to stress that although this event is being held at The Lighthouse, it is in no way affiliated with Made In The Shade. The organisers of Made In The Shade have no dealings with Designcrafts and as such are keen to continue to demarcate Made In The Shade as the platform for indie shopping, neo-craft, quirky design and vintage lifestyle in Glasgow.

We would also like to reassure our customers and our exhibitors that the Designcrafts events appear to target an alternative customer base to Made In The Shade and it seems that these events have their own feel and take on contemporary craft, veering perhaps toward a more traditional theme. We do not anticipate that these events will infringe upon our efforts to throw y'all a swell Festive Shopping bash!

Hooray!

Made In The Shade II Thank Yous

My word... Two days on from our second event at The Lighthouse and the Made In The Shade team are still exhausted! Although I am most pleased to see that the darn rain has dried up (albeit temporarily) and that the blue skies are back to lift our spirits for a little while, it is taking all my might not to just curl up and slip back under my duvet!

Anyway... Firstly, we have an enormous amount of thanking to do. Many, many thanks to the 2000 handmade and vintage lovers who came to visit us at Made In The Shade despite the gale-force winds, the hail and the torrential rain! Glasgow shoppers truly are dedicated followers of fashion. Thank you so much for supporting our event and the 55 makers, designers and vintage collectors who showcased their work.

Of course, Made In The Shade would not have had such a prestigous home were it not for the fabulously talented Lynsey Smith, Manager of the Creative Entrepreneurs Club at The Lighthouse who invited us to hold the event in Gallery 5 in the first place. Lynsey has worked in tandem with the Made In The Shade organising team over the last year or so, ensuring that Made In The Shade runs smoothly and that the event continues to develop and grow. Lynsey took up the role of Mistress of Ceremonies at Made In The Shade II and my oh my, we are grateful to her for all her running around! Lynsey - you are wonderful x Thank you too, to the staff at The Lighthouse for overseeing the event and for ensuring that all Made In The Shade visitors were well looked after! Special mention must go to The Lighthouse Conference & Events team and to the lovely Gillian and her helpers. Muchos gracias!

Without the pick of wonderfully creative and talented makers, designers and vintage collectors eager to take part, Made In The Shade simply wouldn't work would it?! Why would thousands of people come to walk around an empty room? Thank you so much to all the exhibitors who went out of their way to build interesting, stunning, effective product displays and thank you to those who really embraced the theme of the day and got a little dressed up for the occasion! We appreciate your efforts and we appreciate your support and interest in Made In The Shade. May the event continue to flourish!

Thanks also to: Ken Robertson, Jennifer Nicolson, Ruth, the promo gals, Claire Sawers, Susie Cormack, Diana Kiernander, Maureen Ellis, Kirstin Innes, She's Crafty, Indie Quarter, The Skinny, Robson & Mason, the exhibitors who donated items to our goody bags, Joanne Quinn... and thank you to the exhibitors who noted the amount of work, time and energy that goes in to building a Made In The Shade event and took the time to thank the team (Carrie, Clare, Suzanne and Jo) for their efforts. Flora - thank you so, SO much for your thoughtful gift! Carrie Slug has moved in to my house and is having a lovely time. Gini, Elfie - thank you for your messages. Thank you to everyone who has gone out of their way to help us in the last few months and thank you to those who have positive, encouraging things to say! xx

Breaking News: The Parsonage

Oh! How exciting?!?! Breaking news! Breaking news!

We are utterly, splendidly, delightfully thrilled to confirm that our very favourite choir (of all time), The Parsonage, will be entertaining Made In The Shade customers with a special set of alt. classics and country tunes (and maybe even a Christmassy vibe or two?) at our special Festive Shopping Weekender at The Lighthouse.

The choir, led by choir mistress Janis Fyfe Murray, will perform around 3.30pm on the afternoon of Saturday 6th December.

If you have never heard The Parsonage sing before, you oughtta purchase your tickets for their Hank Williams tribute afternoon on Sunday 1st November. The Parsonage (and chums) will perform at Glasgow University's Debating Chamber from 2pm. Visit the choir's Myspace for more information. Oh. And be sure to take along plenty Handy Andies. I'm not sure if this is just me, but I become a little 'overwhelmed' when I hear those voices swirl around! Just beautiful. Best be prepared! :o)

The Sunday Times

My oh my! We are moving up in the world! Made In The Shade has entered the realm of the broadsheet! Who would've thought it?!

With commentary from Carrie Maclennan, Clare Nicolson, Jo Gurney and Josie Mckay, the article focuses on the neo-craft movement in Scotland and the role events like Made In The Shade and crafty networks such as the Glasgow Craft Mafia play in shifting perceptions of traditional arts and crafts.

Um... nice photo. This is the photo that accompanies the piece - taken in London Town at the grand opening party of Nina's Vintage Hair Parlour (Pheonix Artist Club). Many thanks to Nina for allowing us to bring the photographer and many thanks to Maurice at the Pheonix for allowing us to be photographed in the venue!

Read the article online here! Better still - go out and buy a copy and paste it in your scrapbook!

Nina's Vintage Hair Parlour

This week, Made In The Shade co-organisers Carrie Maclennan + Clare Nicolson were lucky enough to be invited to attend the grand opening party of Nina Butkovich-Budden's Vintage Hair Parlour & Ladies Boudoir in London Town this week. The party was hosted by Nina and her team and held at the Pheonix Artist Club in London's Westend on Wednesday 8th October. Carrie & Clare were (unsurprisingly) in their element - meeting and mingling with London's glamorous underground vintage enthusiasts and other likeminded makers and creative entrepreneurs. The Sunday Times (oh yes) sent a photographer to cover the ladies' old time evening so keep your eyes open for shots from the Pheonix Club in the press! May Made In The Shade now be on the lips of jivers and designers alike!

As if we weren't ecstatic enough to have been able to join in the celebrations with Nina and her glamorous chums and the fabulous burlesque starlets, we're also thrilled to announce that Nina will be setting up salon at Made In The Shade during the course of the Festive Shopping Weekender at The Lighthouse on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December. We will shortly be taking limited bookings on Nina's behalf. So - vintage enthusiasts! Glamour pusses! Burlesque godesses! Pin-up dreamers! Keep your finger tips at the ready over the next few weeks and remain poised to reserve your slot for an up-do! As Ophelia Bitz announced to the crowds on Wednesday, 'This woman will change your life!' Oh and she will....

She's Crafty is a blogsite run by 'Miss Crafty' as a salute to those old-timey and creative things which inspire her. Sprinkling the internet with crafty gems and witty insights into the mind of a craft connoisseur, the site is really rather wonderful! Be sure to keep those peepers peeled for more Made In The Shade tittle tattle in your favourite mags, papers and on your favourite websites over the next few weeks!

Robson & Mason

Early bird customers who made it along to Made In The Shade back in May received a wonderful FREE goody bag as a memento of their visit. To ensure our gifts were super-special, we gathered contributions from generous Made In The Shade exhibitors and from our lovely hosts at The Lighthouse. Bags included beautiful accessories, gocco prints, badges and pins, sticker sets, framed photographs, designer mugs and an assortment of other handmade wonders destined to put grins on the faces of any indie design lover!

If you missed out on free treats last time, never fear! The early bird goody bag fairy will make her return visit to Made In The Shade on October 25th and this time the gifts are set to be even more impressive - if this is, indeed, possible! We are currently accepting contributions for inclusion in this season's gift bag. To find out more please contact wearemadeintheshade@gmail.com.

However, aherm, a very, very special mention must be granted to the incredible contribution we received from haberdashery masters Robson & Mason. Customers and crafties who manage to get their mitts on the free packs we received from the very generous Robson & Mason will surely whoop with joy! To learn more about Robson & Mason, please do visit their blogsite. Bringing together a delightful mixture of posts about up-coming designers, artists, film makers, embroiderers, pattern designers and photographers with reviews of some of the quirkiest clubs, websites, books and blogs that attract their keen eyes, the blog is both beautiful and engaging. It's worth popping over just to see their gorgeous promo shots! Brightly coloured buttons, ribbons and pin cushions... Exquisite! Visit www.robsonandmason.co.uk to shop for trimmings, fabric, buttons, beads and, and, and, every little bit and bob you could dream of to make your crafty creations that extra touch of pretty.

Thank you Robson & Mason!
